Is there parking available?

Leith Community Education Centre does not have parking and does not own or operate either of the car parks at the New Kirkgate Shopping Centre. The top car park is owned by the Shopping Centre’s Management Company, Burnsmall, so any issues should be addressed to the Shopping Centre’s Security Office or to the owners of the Shopping Centre on scott@burnsmall.co.uk. The bottom car park is Lidl’s car park. Parking is only allowed there for an hour and a half and you will receive a fine if you exceed this time. Any issues should be addressed to the private company, Athena, who administer the car park. They can be contacted on www.athena-parking.com

Which bus can I get to the Centre?

LRT buses – 1, 7, 10, 12, 14, 16, 21, 22, 25, 35, 36 and 49 all stop in the area. Check out www.lothianbuses.com

Do you have an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) on site?

The Rotary Club of Leith kindly donated an AED to the Centre so that lives could be saved in the Centre and in the local area. This is located in the Centre’s Reception and the Centre’s staff are trained in its use. Please check out www.aedsinscotland.org.uk for more information about AED’s and other locations around Scotland.

What time is the Café open?

It is open 9am – 3pm (Mon – Fri) and 9am – 2pm (Saturdays), offering good quality food at reasonable prices.

Where is the nearest public toilet?

The Community Centre’s toilets are only for the use of those using the Community Centre (people attending groups or using the Cafe). We do not have public toilets – the nearest public toilets are at Leith Victoria Swim Baths or at Taylor Gardens (along Great Junction Street). Please check out http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/a_to_z/service/940703/public_toilets for more information about City of Edinburgh Council’s public toilets. Some shops in the Shopping Centre, including Lidl and Greggs, have toilets for their customers – just ask a member of their staff.

Do you offer a photocopying service?

Unfortunately, we are not able to offer a photocopying service. Places in Leith who can offer this service are Leith Print and Copy (Bernard Street), Minuteman Press (Elm Row), the Post Office on Elm Row or the Coffee Home Internet Cafe on Leith Walk (0131 477 8336).

Is there internet access?

We have 3 public computers in the Cafe (available 9am – 2.45pm Monday to Thursday, 9am – 12 noon on Fridays) which have internet access. These are available on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. Please note that there is no printing or USB access on the computers. There is also free wifi access in the Centre – just ask reception for the password.

Are there English classes at the Centre?

The Beginners classes which run here in the mornings (9.30am – 12.00 noon) are run by Edinburgh College. Please phone them on 0131 535 4630 to arrange an interview and language test. The Intermediate and Pre-Intermediate classes are run in the evenings – please phone South Bridge on 558 3545 to arrange an interview and language test. 

Is there access for those with a disability?

Yes, the Centre is accessible for those with a disability. The Centre is on the first floor of the New Kirkgate Shopping Centre and there is a lift on the ground floor, beside Superdrug. There is also a ramp from the ground floor parking area up to the first floor.

The Centre has an accessible toilet which can be accessed by a RADAR key. The Centre also recently installed ‘Grace’s Sign’ an accessible toilet sign, designed by Grace, an 11 year old from Prestonpans, to include people with invisible disabilities. A portable loop system is available for meetings and assistance dogs are welcome in the Centre.

Is there a creche available?

No, there are several under 5’s groups which run in the Centre but no creche.

Are bicycles and scooters allowed in the Centre?

Bikes and scooters are not allowed in the Centre – they can be chained up on the railings outside the Centre at the owner’s own risk.

Can I book a birthday party for my child?

We have space in the Sports Hall on Saturday afternoons (12 noon – 2pm) for parties for children under the age of 10. The charge is £30 an hour and you are welcome to bring your own entertainment – though if you are having a bouncy castle, it must be supplied by an official hire company. Helium balloons cannot be brought into the Centre.

Can I book Badminton court space?

Badminton Courts can be booked on Thursday mornings between 11.30am – 12.30pm. We provide the posts and nets, please bring along your own shuttlecocks and rackets. £15 a court – please phone the Centre on 0131 554 4750 to book.

Are there other buildings in Leith which can offer space for meetings/groups?

If we are unable to offer space for your meeting/group, you can try Fort Community Wing (0131 553 1074), The Halls (0131 554 2578) or Pilmeny Youth Centre (0131 554 0953) who may be able to offer space.

What is the number for the Health and Social Criminal Justice building in the New Kirkgate Shopping Centre?

The Health and Social Care Criminal Justice building can be contacted on 0131 553 3835.

What is the number for the Leith Community Treatment Centre?

The Leith Community Treatment Centre is based at Junction Place. They can be contacted on 0131 536 6225.

Do you have breastfeeding facilities?

You are welcome to breastfeed anywhere in the Centre. If you would prefer a private room, please ask a member of staff who will arrange this for you. If a chair or a glass of water is required, we will be happy to provide this. I want to run an event/do market research/set up a stall in the Shopping Centre – who do I contact?
